Home is where the Art Is

Home is where the Art is, the Zeitz MOCAA’s current exhibition, is one I’m proud to be a part of.

A fervent celebration of all things Cape Town, this collection comprises nearly 2000 works of art. Paintings, sketches, Sculptures, audiovisuals and more created by children, emerging and established artists, hobbyists, crafters, photographers, and even masterworks from private collections.

Home is Where the Art Is – Zeitz MOCAA

What I love about this exhibition is that it’s not just a gallery of well-known Artistés, but in fact, Art created by the people for the people. Home is where the Art is, has made art accessible to all.

The exhibition is arranged according to five themes, each encompassing literal and metaphoric interpretations:

  • The Garden explores the life of plants, growth, cultivation, and labor
  • Outside encompasses landscape and public space
  • Inside includes interiors, domestic space, and inner psychological state
  • Time notes the passage and marking of time as well as abstract expressions
  • Relations celebrates interconnectedness, relationships, and communities

“Home Is Where the Art Is is a love letter to art, artists and our city, Cape Town.”

South Africa endured a very strenuous and lengthy lockdown during 2020. Due to the pandemic many were confined to their homes. Home is where many of our memories are made. Thus, this exhibition couldn’t come at a more timely moment than now as the country emerges from lockdown.

During this pandemic, I have learned to appreciate life more and celebrate each moment as if it were my last. So too, the Zeitz MOCAA chooses to celebrate our existence through these artworks.

We have Lift Off

Many thanks to talented photographer Johan Vermeulen who captured this portrait of me so perfectly.

Originally we had planned on a vintage pinup shoot, but when the pandemic hit I felt this photograph aptly depicted my ambivalence and uncertainty at the state of the Tourism and Hospitality sector. As borders opened up, we were teased with the possibility of Tourism picking up in South Africa. Yet covid travel regulations and banned countries list placed a steady decline on travel. Being from this sector, I naturally felt both fear and trepidation.

After opening in Oct 2020 this exhibition has been extended to run until Oct 2021.
